Buy the Best Presents for Every Occasion

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

One of the best ways to show a loved one you care is by giving them a present. Whether your giving this to mark a special occasion or maybe just to let them know you care, presents are something that you should take time selecting.

The main reason why timeshould be taken with selecting these gifts is because it will say a lot about your relationship with the recipient. Instead of just getting the first thing you see, it’s always better to think about the person who you are buyinig the gift for and think about what they like.

One of the most common misconceptions regarding presents is that you have to spend a lot of money to make them be a good one. Typically this is not the case. Although sometimes a great present for a person just happens to be expensive, there are still plenty of options that are cheaper and the receiver will appreciate and love.

If you are looking to make your gift really count, the first thing you should do is consider the occasion. If this is for a romantic occasion, then you should think about going for meaningful gifts that say something about your relationship – anniversary presents can sometimes be tricky.

On the other hand, if this present is for a special occasion such as a birthday, you could consider thinking about what interested the person has. If they like something such as reading, then think about buying them a book that would really appeal.

This tactic can work well even if you are giving gifts to people you do not know that well. Just think about the characteristics they have that stand out to you and take it from there. Because your gifts or gift sets will show that you put at least a little bit of effort into it.

When it comes to the holidays, virtually everyone has trouble to find the right gift for everyone on their list. People normally get to a point where they have no time so they just have to buy last minute presents.

Even if you have to buy a last minute present, you still can make this meaningful for the receiver. You just need to use the same method as before. Think about what their hobbis and buy a quick gift off of that. As long as you put some thought into it, it will show.

Some Presents are Just Not Good Enough

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Kirkland McCauley bought his wife an elephant for her birthday. It was not a present she liked or understood, and it made a mess on her carpets. In fact it remained the elephant in the room, the unspoken horror that separated them for the last few days of their marriage.

Kirkland bought his present on the Internet. Nowadays it is very easy to be imaginative. Look through Google or Amazon for the keyphrase ‘present’, or ‘presents’ and the choice is, if not unlimited, at least very wide. It ranges from a pampering days to skydiving, having a star named after somebody to buying a set of champagne flutes.

But being imaginative is not enough, as Mrs McCauley was quick to tell her husband of the moment. The miracle of having a mobile phone that meant he could access the Internet, and thereby arrange such transactions as buying an elephant while down the pub with his friends, did not compensate for the inconvenience. And anyway he always knew she never liked grey.

So choosing suitable christmas or birthday presents is an art form requiring a mixture of diplomacy, creativity, sensitivity, and inspiration.

The world wide web is a excellent aid as it opens up endless possibilities. But it is not the full picture.

‘Something different’ is never enough. Being impractical is not enough, although it can help. After all, who likes a practical present – a washing machine, new iron or paint brush?

‘Frivolous’ often helps, as does ‘extravagance’ – or at least the appearance of either.

{Buying something because you have always wanted one yourself is certainly not the way to go}. What wife wants the almost complete set of Charlton Athletic football programmes, 1967 to 1983 – missing only the April 1971 Accrington Stanley game?

Picking something ‘worthwhile’ or that send a message is worse. A month at boot camp seldom does the trick.

‘So ‘appropriate’, possibly in a witty way, is the most important gift adjective – but appropriate to the receiver not the giver. But the worst that can happen is that the gift ’says more’ about the giver’s interests than those of the receiver. The best that can happen is that the giver receives in return increased appreciation of his or her thoughtfulness and sensitivity.

Meanwhile Kirkland went back to his job at the zoo a wiser man, and Mrs McCauley was remarried to a big game hunter who always brought her gift sets - and jewellery, and chocolates and only the occasional subscription to Rifles and Telescopic Sights magazine.

Large Presents Are Not Always The Best

Look to the Internet for Terrific Gift Ideas

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I must ashamedly tell you…I’m a gift klutz.  I guess it’s not really that I’m bad about the giving part, itself.  Whenever it is gift-giving time, it just takes me an extremely long time to move beyond the decision stage.  I don’t know why my ideas seem to me to lack any originality or creativity.  I’m sure you’ve already figured out the solution to my despair: the Internet.

The web has plenty of both traditional and non-traditional present ideas  Now I realize that everyone is out to make a buck, but that doesn’t bother me in the least.  I figure if someone can help me solve my gift quandry, then they deserve to make a profit from my purchase.  I’m an American, and we think of that as patriotism.

Where else except the Internet could I have learned that I could get my mother a New York cheesecake in place of the tin of cookies I sent year after year?  Yes, I am clever enough that now I figured out on my own that I can even radically change to a different cheesecake flavor!

My sister-in-law has my same decision making problem.  She went online and discovered a jewelry idea for her aunt (on the good side of the family–not mine).  While it turned out well for her, it made me jealous!

There are gift ideas online for various age groups like retired folks or young couples.  You can also use a search engine to find articles recommending gifts of all the gift giving occasions from Christmas to Bar Mitzvahs, birthdays to graduations, or even those holidays when nobody seems to really know the origin, such as Sweetest Day or St. Astor’s day or Siamese kitten day.  You can even search by the category of the item that you want to give.  You might be inventive enough to know that you want to buy Cousin Martha a scarf, so you can check out which ones are most popular or unique or are the greenest.  You might know that you want to buy your neighbor some accessory for his newly restored 1957 Chevy convertible.  You can actually search for specific parts for that sort of thing.  The possibilities are mind boggling for me, of course so is a toaster.

Indeed, there are entire websites created for gift klutzes just like me where people publish ideas.  It seems that they have so many ideas they can afford to share them.  If you have any great gift ideas, consider sharing them with me so that I can steal them from you and take the credit.  Just publish them online.  You can count on my everlasting appreciation.

Making a Gift Basket For a Special Person

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Receiving a gift basket is great fun. However there are those who receive far more satisfaction from making their own, either for business or for personal reasons. All your creativity is engaged. All your craftmaking skills are brought to bear. However it can be a rather scary task to many who are unsure how to get started. The good news is that there are many of ideas out there that you can use for yourself.  Some choices you can have include a gift basket for wine lovers and gift basket for chocolate lovers.

Deciding on a theme is the very first thing that you should do before making your gift basket. There really aren’t any strict rules on what theme this can be. Think about the person’s hobbies such as book reading Consider a gift basket full of books and top it off with a little book light. In addition to the books, some chocolate may be nice so that they can enjoy it whilst reading their books. For chess enthusiasts you can make them a wonderful gift basket. Think of stuffing a gift basket with a miniature magnetized set and arranging the pieces in an interesting pattern.

Once you have finished this you can go onto designing your basket. It might be that you would like to make a drawing of it of you might just think of the design in your mind. A list of all the materials you’ll need is also necessary along with the tools and sizes. Now that you have your list you can begin buying all that you need. This can be a lot of fun and it needn’t be a chore.

Even if you have never done this before, you’ll need to purchase a basket. That can be anything that will hold the items – a traditional wicker container, an antique coffee can, an ancient toy bucket or a contemporary planter. If you can, try to buy a basket that matches the overall theme you have choosen.

Picking the gifts and the basket is the first two steps, now wrapping it all up is needed. Cellophane is one great choice. However you could also choose wax paper which is great to work with but also adds an extra element of surprise in terms of opening it.
